Engagement leads to impact

Impact- and value-driven organisations manage impact as an intrinsic and daily component of their activities. Conversely, many others view impact merely as an extra task that adds unnecessary complexity, requiring additional, targeted effort.

For organisations aiming to generate impact — especially ones which often lack a constant flow of qualitative and quantitative metrics — an effective approach is to combine audience engagement with data collection. Essentially, the very way an organisation interacts with its audience becomes the tool for acquiring essential information.

This approach is grounded in the principle that content and services should be developed based on audience feedback.

A concrete example is inviting the audience to self-document their cultural experiences: e.g., through photos or stories that capture their experiences and reactions which can reveal patterns of engagement, emotional responses, and social connections.

This strategy not only actively involves people in articulating what impact means to them (what they consider relevant to document) but also provides the organisation with concrete evidence of that impact (e.g. photos of their family members and friends enjoying themselves can be evidence of successful impact on social connections).

To be effective, these activities must be:
  1. Personalised based on the context, capabilities, needs, and motivations of the target audience.
  2. Meaningful to the audience.
  3. Ideally, developed in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
